Club statement: VFL season cancelled

The AFL today announced that the 2020 VFL season will not proceed.

See link to the official statement HERE.

President Clint Rippon stated: “Despite the significant amount of hard work and collaboration with AFL Victoria and our fellow VFL clubs over recent months, our efforts have been hampered by the reintroduction of Stage 3 Victorian Government restrictions.

“Unfortunately we have no choice but to accept that a VFL season will not proceed this year.

“We recognise that such restrictions are essential to protect the public and we wish everyone impacted all the very best for the challenging period that lies ahead.

“At the end of the day, our priority lies with supporting the health and safety of our people and the wider community as we battle this pandemic.”

CEO Jason Reddick added: “As disappointed as we are to not be playing VFL football this season, in the greater scheme of what our communities are facing at present, this is the correct decision.

“It has been made in the best interests of all concerned in our Club, our industry and our community.

“As a Club we can be proud of our efforts in leaving no stone unturned in aiming to produce a 2020 VFL competition of integrity.

“To that extent, I wish to recognise the following:

  1. the commitment of our entire VFL playing group, coaches and support staff who maintained their professional preparations for the season and agreed to continue to perform their roles at training and on match days with no pay;
  2. our full time staff who have been on reduced hours yet worked so hard in the background in ensuring our team, venue and Club was best prepared for all scenarios;
  3. the time commitment and expertise provided by our Directors on various issues throughout this period;
  4. the amazing support from our loyal members and corporate partners who have maintained their financial commitment to the Club this season despite the threat of no football action.”

The AFL is continuing to explore the VFLW Super Series proposed for September, and Williamstown is involved in supporting the Western region representative team and all our players who may be selected for that series.

We will provide further details as soon as we are advised by the AFL.

Reddick now turns his attention to other challenges.

“Our Club focus now moves to working with our fellow state league clubs and the AFL on the future structure of the state league competitions, and preparations for our VFL and VFLW teams to be stronger than ever in 2021.

“We have a lot to look forward to next year, including a wonderful new playing surface thanks to the recent announcement from Hobsons Bay Council to invest $2 million into the ground reconstruction, commencing in October 2020.

“We will continue to keep members informed of other Club developments and look forward to when we can all come together again as one Club.

“Until then, we want everyone to continue to take care of each other and remain safe.”
