Williamstown CEO Jason Reddick acknowledged the difficulties for Casey that forced their hand.

“We understand that each VFL club has had to face some unique challenges in preparing their VFL team to participate in a 2020 season, and Casey have undoubtedly arrived at this decision in the best interests of their club,” Reddick said.

“We certainly feel for all their players, staff and stakeholders that were looking forward to being involved in state league action this year.

“The positive news is that there remains a strong resolve among the seven VFL clubs: Box Hill, Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Sandringham, Werribee and Williamstown; together with the AFL, to deliver a 2020 VFL season."

The AFL and clubs are currently working through all the logistics of a season including rules and regulations, player contracting and lists, fixtures and new medical protocols. Announcements on these matters will be made in the coming weeks.

Reddick noted that the health and well-being of our people is paramount.

“Williamstown Football Club will always ensure we operate in full accordance with the State Government and AFL health protocols to ensure the safety of all our players, staff, members, corporate partners and supporters,” he said.

“We look forward to the commencement of the 2020 season and the continued support of our Seagull fans.

“In the meantime though, we encourage everyone in our community to stay safe and abide by the State Government rules so we may all overcome the impact of COVID-19.”
