VFLW Memory Lane: Richmond

VFLW SEAGULLS CLAIM HISTORIC WIN

It was both a historic and momentous day for the Williamstown Football Club as our women’s team won their first ever VFLW game, claiming victory against Richmond in the ‘Pride Game'.

In dry but breezy conditions, the rainbow-sashed Seagulls walked away 31-point winners, defeating Richmond 8.4 (52) to 3.3 (21).

With multiple players coming back into the side, Williamstown struck gold for the first time this season thanks to a great team performance which has been building for the past three weeks.

There were multiple debutants today as Megan Williamson, Sophie Van De Heuvel and Stacey Cross all made their first appearances for the blue and gold. Williamson and Van De Heuvel both played brilliantly in their first run with the club, with Williamson gaining best-on honours, showing off her ability to win the ball in and around the contest.

AFLW-listed players Jess Duffin and Jenna Bruton were at their very best today, racking up plenty of disposals using their skill and class. Duffin capped off her excellent game with a long bomb from beyond the 50-metre arc in the second quarter.

Defender Jacinta Reid and winger Morgan Lowe continued their run of good form today, as both were named in the best players.

Hit-up forward Georgia Harris executed her role perfectly kicking two important goals, whilst Emily Paterno and Jasmine Garner both kicked one goal each, as they provided plenty of opportunities up forward.

Looking ahead to next week, it’s a double-header at Williamstown as the women’s team host the Casey Demons starting at 11:00am.

Final Score:

Williamstown:  8.4 (52)

Richmond: 3.3 (21)

Goals: Harris 2, Duffin, Williamson, Garner, Seabrook, Cross, Paterno 1
