VFLW Memory Lane: Essendon

Not even a blast from the Arctic could deny our women’s team their third win of the season as we walked away 28-point winners against the Essendon Bombers.

In what can only be described as terrible conditions at Windy Hill, our four-quarter effort against the Bombers was outstanding – especially in the critical final term in which we kicked four unanswered goals.
With two final quarter goals, Jasmine Garner led the surge to victory which is the first time we’ve strung together consecutive victories in a row this season.
Garner’s trademark high-flying marks in the forward half allowed her to have multiple chances at goal but even help set-up multiple others in a spurring display from the forward.
The wet and wild conditions were a bleak reminder of our earlier season hit-out against the Bombers, in which that game was suspended for five minutes due to hail.
The first and final quarters were lashed by incredible winds and heavy rain, which made ball movement difficult.
Sophie Van De Heuvel was back to her very best, winning the contested ball and picking up disposals across the ground and even sneaking forward to kick a valuable goal in the first quarter.
Jess Duffin and Jenna Bruton continued displaying their talents with both leading the way in the first half. Duffin’s intercept marking accompanied by Bruton’s tackling lifted us to a half-time lead of 10 points.
Andrea Cameron and Rebecca Dardengo rounded out the better players for us, with Cameron’s ability to win clearances crucial to allowing our forwards to have chances. Dardengo continued her purple patch of form with plenty of rebounds from defence and intercepting numerous Essendon attacks.
An Emily Paterno wonder-goal close to the boundary in the last term capped off a terrific day for our women’s side.
Looking ahead to next week, the Seagulls head across to Melbourne University for the last round of the season.
Final Score

Williamstown:  5.7 (37)

Essendon: 1.3 (9)

Goals: Garner 2, Paterno, Williamson, Van de Heuvel 1
