Seagulls come together for inclusion
By Josh Conway
The Williamstown Seagulls FIDA Football side was back in action last weekend at Downer Oval, as the club marked Inclusion Round with the FIDA match and pre-game function on Saturday.
The Seagulls took on the Ballarat Bulldogs in the curtain raiser to our VFL Men's clash with Geelong, with Williamstown prevailing over their Ballarat counterparts 41 to 23. The match was played for the Terry Firth Cup, named after the legendary North Ballarat FIDA coach, who's son Zac is currently part of the Williamstown FIDA side.
The Williamstown Seagulls FIDA side set was established in 2011, providing opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities.
Williamstown Football Club CEO Jason Reddick said the overarching theme of 'inclusion of people of all abilities' rang true throughout the day.
"Our club has set itself a goal to be the most inclusive club for all members of our community and beyond," Reddick said. "We are delighted to have delivered our first match day, themed around the 'inclusion of people of all abilities' which has been in planning for a number of years now.
"The key message is encouraging al clubs to engage and provide opportunities for people of all abilities, and we want to be the leading club in that area."
The pre-match Presidents Lunch at Downer Oval also followed the inclusion message in front of a healthy crowd.
"We are grateful for the support of all the key stakeholders from Hobsons Bay Community Fund, Melbourne University, Disability Sport & Recreation, Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) and the Ballarat Bulldogs and Williamstown Seagulls FIDA clubs, in making the occasion such a great success," Reddick added.
"We look forward to working with them in establishing this as a highlight in our annual calendar."
