Amy Smith drafted as father-daughter

Off-season VFLW recruit Amy Smith has signed with North Melbourne, officially selected with pick 55 at Tuesday night's NAB AFL Women's Draft.

The Kangaroos used Smith's father-daughter eligibility to nab the talented youngster, with father Shaun playing 47 games for the club between 1987 and 1992.

The 21-year-old played in an EDFL premiership with Aberfeldie in 2019 before joining the Seagulls.

Smith comes from a high-level basketball background and her wide range of skills were on show in Williamstown’s February practice matches before COVID-19 halted the 2020 season.

“Amy impressed the club with her work ethic and on-field performances in pre-season,” VFLW Football Manager Claudia Davey said.

“Although it has been a difficult year for all, Amy has continued to work hard outside the club and we look forward to seeing her follow in her father’s footsteps at North Melbourne.”

North AFLW list and football performance manager Rhys Harwood said the club is delighted to secure its first father-daughter selection.

“Amy’s athleticism as well as her dedication to develop her game since crossing from basketball has seen her progress quickly since taking up football prior to the 2019 season,” he told

“Her development has been really impressive and we believe she has great scope to go to the next level in our program.

“Amy is a great athlete, at 170cm, and has a great engine and turn of speed. We think she will be well suited to roles both through the back half of the ground, and the midfield.”

North Melbourne AFLW coach Darren Crocker echoed Harwood’s excitement.

“It’s so exciting to be welcoming our first ever father-daughter into our club, but extra special for myself having played with her father, Shaun,” he said.

“We’re really confident that the program and environment at North will allow Amy to continue her development and realise her full potential.”

Williamstown Football Club congratulates Amy and wishes her all the best in her AFLW journey.
