Mitch Hibberd returns

Williamstown Football Club is thrilled to announce the return of big-bodied midfielder Mitch Hibberd in a major boost to the Club’s midfield stocks.

Hibberd has signed with the Seagulls for the new VFL/East Coast second-tier competition after spending the 2020 season with Essendon, who selected him in the 2019 AFL Rookie Draft.

Downer Oval won’t be unfamiliar territory for the 24-year-old who joined Williamstown ahead of the 2019 VFL season, where he averaged 24.3 touches, seven clearances and 6.9 tackles per game to earn Team of the Year honours and lead the Club for votes in the J.J. Liston Trophy count.

A running machine who staked his claim as one of the premier midfielders in the VFL competition, Hibberd was on of the best players in the 2019 grand final, racking up 25 disposals and four tackles at Ikon Park.

Prior to joining Williamstown, Tasmanian-born Hibberd played four matches with North Melbourne after being drafted with pick 33 in the 2015 AFL National Draft.

Hibberd averaged 13.8 disposals and 4.6 tackles in his five games for the Bombers in 2020.

GM-Football Stephen Soulsby said he is delighted to welcome the versatile midfielder back into the Williamstown fold.

“Having Mitch return after his 12 months at Essendon is a great outcome for us but obviously we prefer to see Mitch still on an AFL list," Soulsby said. "Nonetheless, he sets some very high standards in terms of his preparation and training which will be of great benefit to those around him.

"He had a great 2019 season and showed he was one of the best VFL listed midfielders in the competition - form he will be looking to show again in 2021 given the interruptions at AFL level due to COVID-19," Soulsby added.

"His transition back to the Club will be made easier with a majority of the midfield group he was with still here."
