Williamstown has notched its first win of the 2013 VFL season, defeating Coburg by 100 points at Burbank Oval on Saturday.

Coburg was in striking range until midway through the third term, with just six points the margin, before the Seagulls piled on 17 of the last 19 goals to record a 24.13 (157) to 8.9 (57) victory.

The match was slow to start, with just two goals kicked in the opening term via Williamstown’s Jason Tutt and Justin Sherman, helping the Seagulls create a 14-point lead at the first change.

The second quarter followed suit, with neither team hitting the scoreboard until Coburg registered their first goal of the match at the 12-minute mark of the term.

This spurred on Williamstown’s Charlie Nastasi who kicked two second-quarter goals, while Jake Stringer also added his name to the scoresheet with a left-foot snap to help the Seagulls on their way.

Coburg opened the third quarter strongly, and by the 14-minute mark had the margin back to within a goal.

This proved the turning point as Williamstown began to put their foot down, with the midfield combination of Jackson Macrae, Ben Jolley and Cam Lockwood dominating through the centre.

Up forward, Bulldogs youngster Jake Stringer had a purple patch, booting four out of his five goals consecutively in the latter stages of the third quarter.

Williamstown was then able to build on this momentum, booting eight goals to two in the final term.

Ed Carr kicked two goals within five minutes to cap off his great game, while down back key defenders Mark Austin and Lukas Markovic kept the Tigers’ key talls quiet.

The 100-point win delighted the Williamstown crowd, during the first home game at Burbank Oval for season 2013.

Williamstown will now host Werribee at Burbank Oval this Sunday, in what is always a terrific match-up between these two rivals.
