VFL, VFLW seasons suspended

An update from our President to members of the Williamstown Football Club community:

It’s a well-worn phrase that 24 hours is a long time in football – it seems to be an even longer time in a world where we are facing the emerging implications of COVID-19.

Following on from my communication yesterday, and a subsequent briefing from the AFL, I’m writing to update you about changes to the 2020 VFL and VFLW home and away seasons.

Last night, the AFL advised all VFL and VFLW clubs that the 2020 season will be postponed until 31 May 2020. This decision has not been taken lightly and is based on advice from their own medical officers, and the Government.

Naturally, and I think speaking for all those connected with our Club, we are incredibly disappointed. However, we recognise that safeguarding the health and well-being of everyone involved is paramount, and support the decision made by the AFL.

Over the coming days we will be working with the AFL and collaborating with the other VFL clubs, to more fully understand the implications and flow on effects of the revised fixturing for both our VFL and VFLW seasons.

Please be assured that throughout these discussions we will be working in the best interests of our people, the community and the competition.

The flow of information is not always perfect, so please bear with us. The situation is an ever evolving one, however we remain committed to keeping you as informed as we can.

To that end, as we work through the implications for our Club, we will continue to update you.

Thanks again for your ongoing support during these unprecedented times.

Clint Rippon

President
