Johnstone Suffers Hand Injury

Premiership defender Jack Johnstone will have an interrupted start to 2016 with a freak work accident resulting in hand surgery.

Johnstone is set to miss Williamstown's three practice matches, leaving him in a race against time to be fit for Round 1 of the 2016 VFL season.

Surgery revealed that the 22-year old from Gippsland had suffered minor tendon damage to his hand, after an incident on his work site.

Johnstone was one of the better performers in the Seagulls' recent intra-club hitout and was set to play in tomorrow's first practice match against the Casey Scorpions.

Football Manager Chris Dixon said it would be a minor setback for the premiership player.

"It's disappointing for Jack and a good reminder about the incidents that can occur for part-time footballers, particularly those working in manual labour," said Dixon.

"The positive is that he'll be able to maintain full fitness over the next few weeks which will keep him in the mix for Round 1 against Richmond."

The Seagulls will kick off their 2016 campaign against the Tigers at Burbank Oval on Sunday April 10.
