Seagulls Defeat Zebras for Prelim Berth

WILLIAMSTOWN has given themselves the best chance at the 2015 VFL premiership, booking a spot in a preliminary final after recording a 7-point win over Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

The Seagulls overcame a late scare by the Zebras in the final term after a six-goal burst by the home side, but  ultimately hung on for a crucial victory, 13.6 (84) to 11.11 (77).

After leading by 48 points at three-quarter time, Sandringham rattled off six unanswered goals with the aid of a very strong breeze to almost pinch it.

The Seagulls will now wait and see who wins the semi-final clash between Footscray and Essendon to determine their prelimary final opponent.

Williamstown ruckman Nick Meese was a star, completely dominating his two Sandringham opponents despite giving away a lot of height. The big ruckman was far too strong in the middle and gave first use to the Williamstown onballers time and again.

Midfielders Adam Marcon and Willie Wheeler were also just as instrumental in the result, putting their bodies on the line to win the hard ball while also hitting the scoreboard with a goal each.

Williamstown was also superbly served by attacking backmen Jack Johnstone and Ben Bese, with the latter coming up with a couple of huge plays down the stretch.

Up forward it was a mixture of ten goalkickers, which has been a regular occurence for the Seagulls over the course of season 2015.

With the win banked, Williamstown will now meet the winner of the Footscray vs Essendon semi-final in two weeks time.

Final Score

Sandringham: 11.11 (77)
Williamstown: 13.6 (84)

Goals: Dunell 2, Conway 2, Lockwood 2, Gibbons, Owen, Wheeler, Charleston, Clouston, Marcon, Gallucci.
Best: Meese, Marcon, Wheeler, Johnstone, Bese, Jolley.
