Three Seagulls drafted in AFL National Draft
Williamstown Football Club have made VFL history with three players drafted in the 2018 AFL National Draft on Friday afternoon!
Ben Cavarra, Lachlan Schultz and Brett Bewley have all been rewarded for great seasons with select AFL lists next year.
Cavarra, 21 was the first Seagull to be selected, taken at pick 45 by the Western Bulldogs after two consistent seasons with Williamstown, where he was named in the VFL Team of the Year in both years and kicked a total of 66 goals, averaging two goals and five tackles per game. A former Morrish Medalist, Cavarra become a Seagulls favourite as a live wire small forward.
Schutlz, 20 was next Seagull to be drafted, heading to the Fremantle Dockers with Pick 57. Schutlz played 42 games for the Seagulls since coming from the Bendigo Pioneers and kicked 58 goals. A match winning 3 goal display under the bright lights of Saturday night football against Richmond in this year’s Qualifying Final showed everyone his endless potential. Schultz loved playing against Richmond this year, kicking four goals in a big win in Round 19 and 3 goals in the round 10 clash at home. Lachie kicked 24 goals whilst averaging 15 disposals and 3 tackles per match, and his second half of the season was instrumental in the Seagulls run into the finals.
Bewley 23, is joining his mate Shultz at Fremantle, with the Dockers selecting him with Pick 59. Bewley played 69 games and kicked 29 goals in his four years at Williamstown. The racking left-footer had an outstanding 2018 with a season high of 39 disposals, 8 tackles against the Northern Blues in round 6, after which he backed up with a 36 disposal match the following week against Geelong. Bewley made the VFL Team of the Year for the second consecutive year and equalled the Draft Combine yo-yo test with a 22.4. A runner-up in our Best and Fairest this year was evidence of how highly he was regarded.
With VFLW seagull player Sophie Van De Heuvel having been taken by Geelong with Pick 2 in the AFLW National Draft, this now makes four Seagulls who have been picked up in National Drafts this year.
Williamstown Football Club is extremely proud of all four players and wish them every success in their future AFL careers.
