Six Seagulls named in VFL, VFLW Teams of the Year

 

Six Seagulls have been rewarded for fantastic 2018 seasons with being named in the VFL and VFLW Teams of the Year. 

VFL Team of the Year

Michael Gibbons, Nick Meese, Ben Cavarra and Brett Bewley all were named in the VFL Team of the Year, while Jess Duffin and Jasmine Garner represented Williamstown in the VFLW Team of the Year. Jess Duffin was given the additional honour of being named Captain of the VFLW Team of the Year. 

Gibbons added to his lengthy VFL resume on the night with his third appearance in the team of the year. Gibbons averaged 28.6 disposals, 12 contested possessions and seven clearances.

Nick Meese was nominated as the ruckmen of the side for the fourth consecutive year. Meese was at his dominant best this season for the Gulls, once again averaging over 50 hitouts a game. 

Live wire forward Cavarra continued to be one of the best small forwards/midfielders in the competition finishing fifth in the VFL Goal Kicking included a bag of five against Coburg earlier in the year.

Bewley was at his rebounding best all season as he continues to push his case for an AFL call up. The damaging wingman finished 4th in the league for disposals and the young gun is only getting better.

VFLW Team of the Year

Duffin capped off a terrific first season in the Seagulls colours. The midfielder starred in the Seagulls inaugural season amassing over 25 disposals a game, leading the club in goal kicking and leading the competition in total disposals, marks, inside 50s and uncontested possessions.

Garner was a dominant force for the Gulls throughout the year despite missing several games she put together tremendous performances when in uniform against the likes of Richmond, Essendon and Melbourne University. This is Garner's second consectivute year in the VFLW Team of the Year after last years with the St Kilda Sharks.
