Promising signs despite 30-point loss

It was another historic day today as our women’s team hosted their first game at home against the Southern Saints. Both teams were searching for their first win of the year, but it was the Saints who walked away winners by 30 points, defeating the Seagulls 8.8 – 56 to 4.2 – 26.

Although they didn’t claim victory, the coaches will be impressed in how the team re-grouped after half-time and the way they defended.

Seagulls captain, Sarah Chapman led by example with her tackling in the first quarter and was supported by fellow teammates. The tackling pressure in and around the contest will satisfy the coaching staff.

Jess Duffin continued her impressive start to the year, as she kicked three goals and showcased her contested marking skills.

Belinda Hateley, Jacinta Reid and Shae-Lee Murphy played their roles in the backline. Hateley’s one on one defending, Reid’s pressure and poise and Murphy’s spoiling and marking gained them recognition from the coaches.

Jedda Heard and Anna Saxon performed outstandingly with their overhead marking and their defending. First-gamer, Nikki Wallace played strongly through the middle and she will be better off with more games under the belt.

The game’s hard-style football resulted in head knocks to our two forward targets, Georgia Harris and Amanda Walsh, who both came off from the ground.

Looking ahead to next week, the Seagulls will host Geelong on Sunday at 2pm.

Final Score

Williamstown:  4.2 (26)

Southern Saints: 8.8 (56)

Goals: Duffin 3, Lowe
